Editor’s Review: Mandarin Oriental Spa in Madrid

Editor’s Review: Mandarin Oriental Spa in Madrid

My favorite travel hack when flying to Europe from the United States is to make Madrid my “base” airport for travel. Flights from New York to Madrid tend to be the most consistent in price throughout the year. Madrid also has an international airport where flights to most other European countries are usually relatively affordable.

As you may know, international flights from the US typically take off at night and, due to the time difference, arrive in the very early hours of the morning in Europe. Immediately, your sleep is completely thrown off and unfortunately, your hotel room or airbnb likely won’t be available to check in until the afternoon.

Thankfully, you won’t always have to prop your head up over a cafecito at a random coffee shop or a sandwich at a boqueria. Booking a spa visit for the late morning of your arrival will allow you safe a place to store your bags, a nice light lunch and a relaxing treatment or two where you’ll be forgiven entirely if you happen to fall asleep.

As of today, I’ve visited the Mandarin Oriental Spa in Madrid a total of four times across several trips. I’ve stack ranked their spa services, with comparison to similar offerings available at well known 5-star hotel spas (Ritz and Four Seasons, among others).

Overall Ranked Experience Review:
10/10 Bedside Manner
8/10 Spa Facilities
8/10 Amenities (coffee, tea, water, beverages, food)
10/10 Facial Experience
10/10 Massage Experience(s)
9/10 Spa Visit Experience
Total: 55/60

Below are my favorite treatments and daily itineraries for squeezing in some “you” time while traveling abroad.

Soin Lissant Facial using Biologique Recherche Products

Traveling can take a toll on your skin’s health, especially when traveling overseas. After several hours of sharing the same bubble of air with strangers, you’ll likely want to detox and reset some of your most crucial surfaces. Before getting the the hotel, allow one of the care experts at the Mandarin Oriental Spa treat you to an indulgent and relaxing facial.

My service provider spoke several languages fluently and offered an entirely relaxing experience from start to finish. She was careful with her approach, and made sure to ask substantial questions upfront to ensure products used were gentle and in alignment with my usual routine. At the end of the facial, she walked me through the products that were used, their purpose and those that I could consider adding to my own daily routines.

In the days after my facial, my skin felt tighter, more supple and far more moisturized than it had on previous trips to the same location. I’ve lived in Madrid before and never quite got used to how dry my skin felt constantly while there. This facial completely changed my perspective on how to both start my visits and take care of my skin in various climates.

Deep Tissue Massage

I had my first deep tissue massage in Madrid and haven’t been able to replicate the same quality of experience since. Extremely necessary for long flights in even the most comfortable of airplane seats — this massage offers customizable pressure, allowing for deep tissue recovery for athletes or slightly less firm pressure for those of us simply recovering from lots of walking and extended travel.

Oils and lotions used are customizable for skin sensitivities. All products used are available for purchase following your spa visit.

Relaxing and Anti-Stress Massage

I have to admit, on one trip I did book two massages within two days because the first was so wonderful. The anti-stress massage offered a completely unique, therapeutic experience to my deep tissue massage on the previous day. The session incorporates a large variety of essential oils to choose from, each tailored towards the mood and results you’re hoping to earn from your session. I was ever-so-quietly guided through the use cases for each throughout the experience and was so calm and relaxed that I fell asleep in final 5 minutes of the hour. Still, was very much worth the second trip and all 55 minutes of the experience that I was awake for.

That’s That Me Exclusive: Where to Buy Every Edition of Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Short n’ Sweet’ Album

“I reckon it’s.. officially short n’ sweet month💋💋💋,” Sabrina Carpenter wrote online, weeks before dropping her highly anticipated new album. Fans can now pick up her sixth studio LP, Short n’ Sweet, online and on shelves now in a slew of exclusive vinyl variants. Staying true to its title, the 36-minute Short n’ Sweet includes tracks like “Taste,” Slim Pickins,” “Good Graces,” and, of course, “Please Please Please” and “Espresso.”

“This project is quite special to me and I hope it’ll be something special to you too,” Carpenter wrote online after debuting the Short n’ Sweet album cover and title in June.

“Short, sweet, has made an extraordinary album,” Taylor Swift shared of Short n’ Sweeton Aug. 23 on her Instagram Stories with checkmarks by each line.

Carpenter, who will embark on a sold-out North American tour in support of the album later this year, has taken over our playlists this summer, with chart-topping hits “Please Please Please,” and the undeniably catchy “Espresso.” (“I decided to put that burden on other people,” Carpenter told Rolling Stone earlier this year.)

And while everyone from your uncle to your BFF quotes its chorus with lyrics like “that’s that me espresso” every time they enter the coffee shop, Carpenter somehow followed it up with an equally quotable Short n’ Sweet track (“please don’t embarrass me, motherf-cker”). The Jack Antonoff-produced “Please Please Please” has garnered over hundreds of millions of streams alone, and propelled Carpenter to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 after it hit streaming services this summer.

“There’s like an Olivia Newton [John] feeling, there’s a Dolly feeling, there’s an incredibly super modern pop feeling,” Antonoff previously told Rolling Stone. “The little vocal runs she does are so bizarre and unique — they’re doing this really odd, classic, almost yodel-y country thing. She’s becoming one of the biggest young pop stars, and that song is such a statement of expressing yourself, not just lyrically, but sonically.”

If the tracks’ success are any indication, Carpenter’s new LP, Short N’ Sweet, is destined to become one of the biggest albums of 2024. Instead of releasing just one edition of her studio project, the “Espresso” hitmaker followed the lead of other pop superstars like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish and dropped several exclusive editions of the album.

Sabrina Carpenter Is Viscously Clever and Done With Love Triangles on ‘Short N’ Sweet’: 5 Takeaways

Sabrina Carpenter Is Viscously Clever and Done With Love Triangles on ‘Short N’ Sweet’: 5 Takeaways

After Sabrina Carpenter’s summer takeover with “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” the anticipation for Short n’ Sweet was at an all-time high. On her sixth album, the pop singer keeps the surprises coming as she delivers a masterclass in clever songwriting and hops between R&B and folk-pop with ease. Carpenter writes about the frustration of modern-day romance, all the while cementing herself as a pop classic. Here’s everything we gathered from the new project.

Please Please Please Don’t Underestimate Her Humor

Carpenter gave us a glimpse of her humor on singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” — she’s working late because she’s a singer; ceiling fans are a pretty great invention! But no one could have guessed how downright hilarious she is on Short n’ Sweet, delivering sugary quips like “The Lord forgot my gay awakenin’” (“Slim Pickins”) and “How’s the weather in your mother’s basement?” (“Needless to Say”). She’s also adorably nerdy, fretting about grammar (“This boy doesn’t even know/The difference between ‘there,’ ‘their’ and ‘they are!’”) and getting Shakespearian (“Where art thou? Why not uponeth me?”). On “Juno,” she even takes a subject as serious as pregnancy and twists it into a charming pop culture reference for the ages: “If you love me right, then who knows?/I might let you make me Juno.” It’s official: Do not underestimate Ms. Carpenter’s pen. — A.M.

RFK Jr. Suspends Campaign, Endorses Trump

RFK Jr. Suspends Campaign, Endorses Trump

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has suspended his 2024 presidential campaign, and according to a court filing in Pennsylvania on Friday will throw his weight behind former President Donald Trump.

Multiple news outlets reported on Wednesday that independent presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. was planning to drop out of the race and endorse Trump. He clarified at an event in Arizona on Friday that he is not terminating his campaign, only suspending it, and that his name will remain on the ballot in non-battleground states. He said that if enough people still vote for him and Trump and Kamala Harris tie in the Electoral College, he could still wind up in the White House.

The Chicks’ ‘Not Ready to Make Nice’ Has Somehow Become a MAGA Anthem on TikTok

The Chicks’ ‘Not Ready to Make Nice’ Has Somehow Become a MAGA Anthem on TikTok

One little funny/bizarre/horrifying thing about the internet is the way it offers up everything and, in doing so, makes it possible to strip anything of its history. But to paraphrase Kamala Harris, you didn’t just fall out of the coconut tree. “You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you” — wise words worth heeding, especially for all the Trump voters and conservatives making TikToks with the Chicks’ “Not Ready to Make Nice.”

Over the past month or so, “Not Ready to Make Nice” has become an unexpected MAGA anthem of sorts, meant to express a certain rage at liberals supposedly telling conservatives what to do all the time (the past few Supreme Court terms notwithstanding, apparently). Young women especially have taken the song as a way to push back against the possibility of Harris becoming the first female president.
