In the spring of 2024, Flo Ngala was asked to photograph Vice President Kamala Harris, as part of a Rolling Stone Interview featured in the July/August issue of the magazine.
Ngala traveled to three cities to meet with the vice president, capturing Harris’ energy and charisma as she engaged with constituents at a stop on the Nationwide Economic Opportunity Tour, and spoke at a reproductive freedom rally in Florida. Ngala also visited Harris’ residence in Washington, D.C. where the V.P. posed for a portrait dressed in a crispy ivory suit.
“I was witnessing history,” Ngala — who like Harris, is the daughter of immigrants — said of the assignment.
Flash forward to this past week: President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race and enthusiastically endorsed Vice President Harris to take his place, changing the dynamics of the presidential race and putting Harris in position to potentially be the first woman U.S. president.
In her first speech following the news, Harris echoed remarks from her interview with Rolling Stone‘s Alex Morris: “What kind of country do we want to live in: A country of freedom, compassion, and rule of law? Or a country of chaos, fear, and hate?”
