The 2024 MTVVideo Music Awards is making way for the presidential debate but still tapping some music royalty.
On Monday, MTV announced that the VMAs will now be hosted on Sept. 11 at New York City’s UBS Arena instead of Sept. 10. The event will feature performances from Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Camila Cabello, GloRila, and Rauw Alejandro.
“Continuing MTV’s storied 30+ year tradition of leading nonpartisan civic engagement, our fans are encouraged to tune in for the 9/10 debate ahead of music’s most iconic night,” read a press release from MTV. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are set to face off for their first debate on ABC that night.
Roan, who is up for Best New Artist following the success of Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, will make her VMA debut, while Carpenter will take the stage ahead of her Short n Sweet Tour. Carpenter has also been nominated for six Moon Persons, including Artist and Song of the Year. Last year, she played “Nonsense” and “Feather” from her seminal album Emails I Can’t Sendduring the awards show’s pre-show.
Cabello, for her part, is set to perform a “special fan tribute” to commemorate her fourth album, C, XOXO, which dropped in June. She’s nominated this year in the Best Pop category after taking home four Moon Person trophies over the years.
Rauw Alejandro and GloRilla will make their onstage debuts at the awards show. Glo is up for three awards, including Best Hip-Hop and Best Collaboration for “Wanna Be” alongside Megan Thee Stallion, while Rauw is nominated for Best Choreo, Cinematography, and Latin Video.
The VMAs revealed its list of nominees last week, with Taylor Swift leading the charge with 10 total nods, many of which were for Tortured Poets Department single with Post Malone, “Fortnight,” including for Video of the Year.
Malone picked up nine nominations, Ariana Grande has six noms, as did Eminem and first-time VMA nominee Sabrina Carpenter. The Artist of the Year category includes Swift, Grande, Eminem, Carpenter, Bad Bunny, and SZA.
